Laurie has recently completed levels 1 and 2 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy as well as level 3 Practicum Training and uses Gottman Method Couples Therapy in her work with couples.
Why is the Gottman Method Couples Therapy different?
Gottman couples therapy uses an integrated approach that is based on 40 years of evidence based research and experience. Dr John Gottman and Dr Julie Schwartz Gottman have revolutionized the study of marriage and relationships. For nearly four decades they have conducted research on all facets of relationships and from this knowledge have developed an approach to counselling that not only supports and repairs troubled marriages and committed relationships, but strengthens happy ones.
They have identified destructive patterns such as The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (Criticism; Defensiveness; Contempt; and Stonewalling) which tend to undermine relationships and these behaviours are consistent predictors of divorce. In therapy we help couples identify when the Four Horsemen are apparent and develop antidotes to reduce them.
Gottman Couples therapy also utilizes the Sound Relationship Theory which focuses on developing areas that can predict the stability and happiness of relationships and promotes the return of trust and commitment.
Laurie has many years experience of working with couples or helping people build healthy and happy relationships and the Gottman Methods Couples Therapy training has added more skills and knowledge in her practice with couples.
